Why It’s Good For Your Chapter?

When senior year comes, it can be hard to keep excited about school.  You have put in years upon years of studying, long hours, and test taking.  To be quite frank, you are ready to just get the year over with and prepare for the future.  However, with that type of thinking, you might miss out on some great events and great friendships in your sorority.  You become complacent and appear rather standoffish to the new students that are coming in, and it sets a bad tone for the final year.  It is important to finish school how you started it: with class, dignity, respect, and hard work.

“No Report” & Why It’s Bad For Your Chapter

One of the worst things that can happen to a sorority is when a chairperson or officer says “”no report”” at the chapter meeting. Many of the girls who joined a sorority take great pride in the group and really take time out of their busy schedules to make sure they are at those meetings every time. The words “”no report”” not only scream unprofessional, they tell the group of girls more about the leaders on the sorority than they could ever imagine. Here are just a few reasons why the “”no report”” is bad for your chapter.

Many girls in the sorority take time each week to help improve life around the chapter. They take part in different social fundraisers, help with community service, and spend time recruiting new pledges when they can. These take a lot of effort, and the reward is a bond these girls will most likely share with each other for a lifetime. Those chapter meetings however can really tell a lot about a group and its members. It is a given that during the meetings some members will forget to turn off their phones or wear the wrong clothing, but when an officer of the sorority says “”no report”” during the meeting, it is a real problem.

These girls that have been a part of the sorority for a while elected these leaders because they felt they believed in the values of the organization just like they do. They also believed that when they choose these officers that these girls would make an effort to better the sorority by working diligently on improving different areas of the chapter. The majority of the girls attending these chapter meeting often have to move around their schedules in order to be there. These chapter meetings are often quite long and involve reports, notes, and concerns from previous meetings.

These girls get dressed up and proudly support the sorority at these meetings, expecting those officers to provide some inside into short and long term goals of the chapter. They come to those meetings to hear what these officers have to say, and want to support the leaders in any way they can. Those two words have such a negative impact on the moral of these girls it goes far reaching that just frustration at the meeting.

Chartering a Vessel - What Are the Risks?

The definition of a charter party arrangement is:

"a mercantile lease of a vessel; a specific contract by which the owners of a vessel let the entire vessel, or some principal part of the vessel, to another person, to be used by the latter in transportation for his own account, either under their charge or his."

Charter arrangements usually fall into one of three categories, each being distinguished by the degree of operational control over the vessel which the charterer exercises. The three categories are:

Voyage charter - the charterer is "leasing" space on the vessel (a cargo hold or tank) for one voyage only. The charterer is essentially "along for the ride" since he exercises very little operational control over the vessel.

Time Charter - the charterer leases the vessel for a period of time (usually a year or more). The charterer shares operational control of the vessel with the Vessel Owner, and the ship's Master answers to both parties. The sharing of control normally divides between the vessel's cargo operations (mostly under control of the charterer) versus vessel operations (under the control of the Vessel Owner).

Bareboat (Demise) Charter - the charterer essentially stands in the shoes of the Owner and leases the vessel for a significant period of time. The charterer has full operational control over the vessel and bears all the expenses to operate and maintain the ship. This arrangement allows a charterer to "look like" a Vessel Owner but not carry the expense of this costly asset on his balance sheet.

A charterer faces many of the same exposures to liability as the Vessel Owner does, as well as specific obligations to the Owner. Examples of the exposures the charterer faces vis-à-vis liability to third parties include:

o Liability to cargo

o Pollution liability (in certain jurisdictions)

o Personal injury, property damage to third parties caused by the charterer's negligence

o Fines (depending on the jurisdiction and/or contractual obligations)

The charterer also has a long list of obligations and exposures to the Vessel Owner. These involve damage to the hull arising out of / caused by:

o Liability for nominating an unsafe berth / unsafe port

o Hull and Machinery damage caused by Stevedores

o Damage caused by carriage of hazardous / dangerous goods

o Damage caused by poor / improper stowage of goods

o Damage to ships' engines caused by poor quality bunkers

o Liability to Owners arising out of General Average / Salvage events.

It is often said that when things go wrong on board a ship, they go very badly wrong. The charterer can face enormous liabilities and risk of financial loss even when he is only tangentially involved in the event which gave rise to the claim. What can a charterer do to manage these risks?

The Mentawai Islands, The Playground For Surfers

We started the week with another pulse from the S and headed to playgrounds. Rifles is the closest “Playgrounds” break to Aloita Resort, only a 40min boat ride away (in good conditions). We pulled up to a fairly crowded lineup and 3-5ft runners with the very occasional 6ft set. I explained to the group that Rifles is fickle and this might be their only chance to surf it, so they decided to have a crack.

A few people got some bombs and saw some flashes of it's potential, but the lure of surfing elsewhere was too great. Over to Nipussi with solid 4-5ft of swell and with only two in the water, we were out there.

Our next stop was back to the skatepark that is Four Bobs, again the lineup was almost empty. This was our last stop for the day and the team happily drained their reserves trading off some sharp top turn combos. The next few days saw a dropping swell locally, and variable winds, nothing epic wave wise but still better than home.

We had a couple of chunky surfs at Icelands and some very playful Telescopes. With the swell forecast on hand anticipation levels were at boiling point.

As a large low pressure system parked itself due east of us in the Indian ocean, the N wind flow began. Normally this might cause a few headaches for us but with the swell on tap, Suicides was going to be cooking. The 30th May saw the first swell really show with 3-5ft in the morning, a super fun session was had.

The first swell peaked that afternoon, only a foot bigger than the morning but consistent and clean. The next morning was the best I have seen it at Suicides all year, lined up, offshore and hitting the reef perfectly. At 3-5ft and the right tide, Suicides gets almost playful.
